This page provides a detailed account of the system design aspect of the master's thesis project, Bonding over Distances: Building Social Presence Using Mixed Reality for Transnational Families.
The proposed system is an all-in-one system design of FamilyMR that streamlines the user experience from asset capture to virtual world building, promoting equal collaboration among transnational family members sharing the same virtual family space.
The Complex Current 8-App User Experience
During the development of iterative prototypes, the researcher used a variety of 8 applications and tools to capture assets, optimize files, and construct each 3D virtual family space with customized assets.
Such a complex journey imposes great accessibility barriers, making the use of a customizable virtual family space difficult for many non-tech-savvy users, and hindering equal participation in and ownership of a virtual family space among transnational family members.
The Proposed All-in-One-App User Experience
The proposed system is an all-in-one system design of FamilyMR that streamlines the user experience by combining the features of the abovementioned different tools in the current user experience into one unified system, from asset capture to virtual world-building.
By doing so, this system aims to promote equal collaboration and symmetrical contribution among transnational family members sharing the same virtual family space.
